Me, passing by two nondescript mom-types trolling the children's lit section in a local B&N.
"Well," declares the older of the two, dropping a book onto a table. "it's just so hard to get kids to read anything these days."
The other looks at her with wide eyes. "Yes, you're right."
Struck by her imperious declaration as well as the interesting alpha/beta power dynamic, I open the <lurk> tag.
Betamom follows Alphamom for a moment, watching carefully what books Alphamom deigns to touch.
Betamom's eye is lured by a bright cover. She darts a glance at Alphamom who has already moved down the aisle "Um, what about this one?"
Alphamom's eyebrow arches as she turns.
"Oh, that? Nonono. I would never show them that. It's way too.." she leans in close (as do I, the next aisle over) "too raunchy." Betamom's horror is only equalled by my amazement. Raunch? In the children's book section?
"Let's go," she sweeps magestically out of the aisle, Betamom bobbing in her wake.
My curiosity peaked, I </lurk> and step around the aisle to view the offending book. Judy Blume? Huck Finn?
Oh no. Not even close. I opened it up and thought to myself "Self, I hope they have some kind of required court registry for the sick bastard who thought that this would be appropriate material for a kid's section"
I left in a huff (after browsing in the sci-fi section for another 20 minutes) and came home to find that even Amazon considers this fit for children. Click if you dare (but be sure to send the kids out of the room first.)
